Honoring the Life and Legacy of Lisa Ambrose

It is with deep sorrow that we share the passing of our beloved Executive Director, Lisa Ambrose. Lisa was not only a courageous change-maker and visionary leader—she was also a dear friend. Many of us had the honor of walking alongside her for decades, watching her transform pain into purpose and build a legacy rooted in love, safety, and justice.

Lisa was the founder of Amani Community Services—the first and only comprehensive culturally specific domestic violence and sexual assault organization in the state of Iowa dedicated to serving Black survivors. By establishing this organization, she filled a gap that had long been ignored. Amani stands today as a testament to Lisa’s visionary leadership and tireless advocacy. Her vision created a model of care rooted in cultural understanding, dignity, and healing.

Lisa lived through—and pushed through—so much. She survived two heart transplants, fought breast cancer, and still showed up every day with a vision for a better world. Like many Black women in leadership, she also endured unfair scrutiny and was not always seen for the fullness of her work. We will not ignore that reality. We will speak her name with the fullness of who she was: brilliant, bold, compassionate, and absolutely unwavering in her purpose.

As we continue to process this profound loss, we want to thank the community for giving us time and space to grieve. Your love and patience have meant everything.

A Celebration of Life is being planned, and while initial information has been shared publicly, we understand that final details may shift as the family explores a larger venue to accommodate the many people who loved and respected Lisa. We will share updated information as soon as it
becomes available.

We remain committed to carrying Lisa’s vision forward. Her legacy lives on in every survivor
we serve, every system we challenge, and every act of justice we pursue.

Thank you for honoring her with us.
